Setauket Real Estate

The beautiful North Shore community of Setauket represents the best of Long Island living by offering residents a wealth of possibilities. Surrounded by rich history, this quaint small town provides an array of quality services including job opportunities, medical centers and schools. Whether you prefer an exciting day of shopping and entertainment or a quiet evening at dinner, Setauket has something for everyone. The Setaukets – which include the areas known as East Setauket and Strong's Neck and the villages of Old Field and Poquott – offers an abundance of attractions and activities to distract even the most dedicated of professionals and students.

Minasseroke, or “Little Neck,” was purchased from the Setalcott Indians in the mid-1600s, and European immigrants quickly settled into a way of life that included fishing in the surrounding waters. The Strong Family bought most of the property on Little Neck from another family in the late-1700s, and the peninsula became know as Strongs Neck. Generations of Strongs still live in the community and provide a sense of small town charm. Several organizations, such as the Three Village Historical Society, are dedicated to conserving Long Island’s North Shore.

With its unique location on the North Shore, the waterfront is easily accessible. Setauket Harbor, Port Jefferson Harbor and Conscience Bay are the perfect settings for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, shellfishing and hiking. Several beaches along the North Shore also connect residents to the water including Belle Terre Beach, East Beach and West Beach. To experience even more in this quaint community, residents can participate in a regatta hosted by the Setauket Yacht Club, stop by Mario's, The Curry Club or Bliss for a scrumptious dinner, or take in a round of golf at the exclusive St. George's Golf and Country Club.

The Setaukets’ community spirit can be displayed in many organized events and activities. One such annual event is the Setauket Electric Holiday Parade. The event is sponsored by Three Village Chamber of Commerce, Setauket Fire Dept., Three Village Kiwanis and Times Beacon Record Newspapers. Holiday spirit fills the streets as the illuminated floats, music groups and marchers parade down Main Street. The parade route begins at Emma S. Clark Library and proceeds down Main Street heading East at the Setauket Fire Dept and the festivities continue at Setauket Bridge Pond Park. The park is filled with Music, a Tree Lighting, Student’s Art Displays and an opportunity to say hello to a special visitor who waits in the Gazebo ready for a Holiday Photo. The Setauket Post Office is also on hand to collect the children’s holiday letters. Refreshments are also provided at the park.

Setauket, Long Island, NY

For those who enjoy learning about history, Setauket offers an array of notable sites that give visitors a glimpse into the area’s colorful past. Frank Melville Memorial Park is a peaceful place where many historic buildings are located. The Setauket Post Office that currently stands in the park was built in the 1940s on the same spot as two earlier post offices, and the Grist Mill is a replica of the original mill that was built in 1664. Several buildings in the park were the former residences of the Satterly family. The patriarch, Colonel Issac Satterly, was a general in the Long Island Militia during the American Revolutionary War. His house, which was built next Melville Mill Pond in the early 1700s, was restored by Ward Melville in the 1940s. The Satterly Barn and Satterly House, the home of Issac’s son John, are also located within the park.

Setauket was also the site of a Revolutionary War battle on August 22, 1777. At the time, Long Island residents were split between loyalties to the British and the colonists, and Patriot troops tried unsuccessfully on that date to force the British out of the town. General George Washington also chose a local resident, Major Benjamin Tallmadge, to lead a spy ring to gather information. Many other historic landmarks can be found in Setauket such as Colonial homes that have been renovated into museums, bed & breakfasts or community centers. The Setauket Neighborhood House, which was originally built in the early 1700s, now serves as a gathering place for many local organizations and several classes. One of the oldest churches in the state, Caroline Church, was built in 1729 in Setauket. Other attractions include Gallery North, a not-for-profit gallery celebrating 43 years of promoting the finest contemporary Long Island art and craft, the Emma S. Clarke Library, the Sherwood-Jayne House and the Thompson House.

With its proximity to Stony Brook University Medical Center, residents living in the Setaukets have the opportunity to receive some of the most advanced medical care. Located off Belle Meade Road in Setauket, Stony Brook Tech Park houses many of the university’s physician practices and satellite offices for a convenient solution to everyone's healthcare needs.

Setauket real estate is as eclectic as its history. Property types include single family homes, ranches and farms, waterfront homes, luxury properties, condos and more. Homes located near Main Street date back to the 1700s, and many have been renovated with modern features. Setauket also has its share of planned neighborhoods that offer community amenities and a close-knit atmosphere. Whether you are looking to move up or retire, Setauket offers homes to fit every individual, couple or family. Discover what more than 16,000 people already know about living in Setauket.
