I wanted to share with your readers a story about community service and generosity in our lovely community. This time of the year, our neighborhood is exploding with flowers, green manicured lawns and beautiful shady trees. However, the long street leading into our development has been an eye sore! It was looking very shabby due to years of overgrown weeds and vines. Since no one lives on this street, it was not going to get spruced up without some community effort. So began a campaign with all the neighbors that we "green" this area with perennials. Everyone agreed and a week later some 50 beautiful perennials, donated by generous neighbors, were dropped off by my mailbox for planting.
Not only did the neighbors donate but, Steve Long, owner of Landscapes Unlimited and new owner of Stables Nursery in Port Jefferson, generously volunteered his time and crew for an entire day. They did a full cleanup with a backhoe, planted our perennials and mulched the new garden as well. It looks fantastic. Steve went above and beyond to beautify a part of our community that we can all be proud of now. It was wonderful to have Steve take on a community project with us; we couldn't have done it without his help. He wasn't expecting anything in return, but I feel he deserves an acknowledgment for his hard work and the whole neighborhood is very grateful to him.
